1999 Southland Conference ChampionsÂ
Under the guidance of legendary head coach Larry Blakeney, the 1999 Troy State football team compiled an 11-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in conference play. The Trojans rattled off nine consecutive wins to open the season and were ranked in the Top 10 throughout the entire season. The Trojans notched wins over Cincinnati, South Florida, Middle Tennessee State, Jacksonville State and James Madison throughout the regular season and NCAA FCS Playoffs.Â
Â
The team features three Troy University Sports Hall of Fame members, with Al Lucas, Lawrence Tynes and Brock Nutter all enshrined among the greats of Troy Athletics.
Â
The Trojans finished the season ranked No. 6 in the Sports Network Poll after they defeated James Madison in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Florida A&M in the quarterfinals. Throughout the season, Troy State spent four weeks ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation.Â
Â
Lucas was named the NCAA FCS Defensive Player of the Year as he won the Buck Buchanan Award. Jimmy McClain set school records during the Trojans'Â match-up against South Florida as he returned two interceptions for touchdowns against the Bulls. His two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the same game, and his 114 interception return yards set school records.Â
Â
The defensive unit served as a strength for the Trojans during their championship-winning season. The Trojans produced 105 tackles for loss, which served as a school record until the 2017 team notched 112 tackles for loss. The Trojans allowed the third-fewest rushing yards in a single-season (1,098 yards) and 84.5 rushing yards per game, the second-fewest allowed in a single season by a Trojan defense.Â
Â
Troy's secondary also stood their ground as they broke up 67 passes, the most by a Trojan defense in a single season. The Trojans allowed just 178.1 passing yards per game (fourth fewest), 262.5 total offensive yards per game (second fewest) and 15.38 points per game (fourth fewest).
Â
Tynes, who went on to win two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, handled the kicking duties throughout the historic 1999 championship season. He ranks among the top 10 in Troy history in all of Troy's kicking categories. Nutter, the starting quarterback of that squad, ranks fourth all-time in Troy history in passing yards, attempts, completions and fifth all-time in passing touchdowns and total offensive yards.Â
