Women’s Tennis Competes in Opening Day of ITA Southern Regional

AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis program competed in the ITA Southern Regional qualifying round on Thursday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Emilia Namyslo and Valeriia Avdeeva had to play their way into the main draw and were put into matchups with a pair of SEC programs. Namyslo battled Mississippi State's Athina Pitta in the opening round to a 6-4 loss in the first set. The sophomore aimed to fight back in the second set but fell into the consolation bracket on a 6-2 loss. The Germany native found redemption in the consolation bracket, advancing into the round of 16 with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over SBC foe Southern Miss and earning a bye in round two.
The Russia native earned a first-round bye to match her with Auburn's Julie Bedard in round two. Like Namyslo, Avdeeva kept it tight in the first set, eventually falling 6-4. Set two saw Avdeeva fall 2-6 to end her run.
Doubles open tomorrow's competition as Maria Guirguis, Avdeeva, Gabrielle Leslie and Namyslo battle at 9 a.m.
