Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy Football head coach Gerad Parker beefed up his offensive coaching staff on Saturday with the additions of Caleb Carbine and Re'quan Boyette. Carbine returns to his alma mater to coach the offensive line, while Boyette joins the Troy staff from East Carolina and will coach Troy's running backs.
Â
Caleb Carbine – Offensive Line
Â
Former Troy offensive lineman Caleb Carbine returns to his alma mater for his first season coaching the Trojan offensive line. Carbine joins the Troy staff following one season as a senior offensive analyst at Notre Dame under Troy head coach Gerad Parker.
Â
Notre Dame put together one of their best offensive seasons in program history in 2023 with Carbine on staff. Notre Dame ranked seventh nationally, averaging 39.2 points per game, in addition to ranking ninth in passing efficiency and 29th in total offense. Audric Estime was one of the nation's elite running backs, ranking third in rushing touchdowns (18) and eighth in rushing yards per game (111.8).
Â
The Fighting Irish posted a 10-3 record against one of the nation's most challenging schedules, including four straight games against ranked opponents, and their 32-point victory over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl was the largest victory by a Notre Dame squad in a bowl game. Offensive tackle Joe Alt was a consensus All-America selection, while Estime was named to the Associated Press All-America Team.
Â
Notre Dame's offense increased production across the board in Carbine's lone season on staff in South Bend. The Irish improved their scoring by more than a touchdown per game, in addition to seeing increases in yards per game, passing yards per game, yards per play and red zone scoring.Â
Â
Carbine joined the Notre Dame staff following one season as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at North Alabama, where he began his playing career in 2010. The Lions ranked 29th nationally in rushing offense and averaged nearly 30 points a game, while ShunDerrick Powell ranked fourth nationally with 1,508 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
Â
Prior to his stint at UNA, Carbine spent three seasons at West Virginia working with former Troy head coach Neal Brown. Serving as a graduate assistant for the Mountaineers, Carbine worked with tight ends, fullbacks, offensive line and quarterbacks. The Mountaineers won the 2020 Liberty Bowl, played in the 2021 Guaranteed Rate Bowl and produced Freshman All-American offensive linemen in Zach Frazier (2020) and Wyatt Milum (2021).
Â
Carbine began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Troy, working with special teams in 2016. That season, he was part of one of the biggest turnarounds in college football as the Trojans earned the first AP Top 25 ranking in conference history, the first 10-win season at Troy at the FBS level.
In 2017-18, he was a graduate assistant with the Troy offense, working specifically with the offensive line. The Trojans had the most wins in school history during his three-year tenure, going 31-8 while winning the Dollar General Bowl twice, the New Orleans Bowl and a Sun Belt Conference title. Four of Troy's five starting offensive linemen were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team in 2017 and 2018.
Carbine transferred to Troy in 2011 and played for the Trojans through the 2014 season. He was a two-year starter at center at Troy after walking on and earning a scholarship after his junior season. He was part of an offense that led the Sun Belt Conference in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. That unit also finished second in the conference in fewest sacks allowed.
He is married to the former Laura Beth Hatcher, a Troy graduate.
Â
Re'quan Boyette – Running Backs
Â
Re'quan Boyette begins his first season as Troy's running backs coach following two seasons at East Carolina and a 10-year career at Duke, where he was a two-time team captain as a player for the Blue Devils.
Â
Boyette coached the Pirates' outside receivers in 2022 and mentored a group that tallied 134 receptions for 1,689 yards (12.6 ypc) with 10 touchdowns before coaching ECU's running backs in 2023.Â
Â
In 2022, East Carolina ranked among the NCAA leaders in passing offense (16th/290.5), total offense (23rd/461.1), pass efficiency (28th/149.29) and scoring offense (35th/32/5), while graduate transfer Isaiah Winstead was one of two players on the squad to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards.
Â
He worked his way up the ranks at Duke, beginning as a graduate assistant in 2012 before moving into a full time role in 2013 and eventually the co-offensive coordinator in 2021.
Â
Boyette was part of a Duke program that advanced to the ACC Championship Game and Peach Bowl in 2013 and the Sun Bowl in 2014 before capturing postseason titles in the Pinstripe Bowl (2015), the Quick Lane Bowl (2017) and Independence Bowl (2018).
Â
Under Boyette's guidance, the Blue Devils featured a pair of 700-yard receivers during the 2021 season and six pass-catchers who averaged more than 10 yards per reception.
Â
Among Boyette's other notable highlights was Duke's rushing attack in 2015 when the Blue Devils ranked fifth in the ACC in ground yards per game (192.9), the team's highest average since 1977. Duke joined Clemson and North Carolina as the only squads in the league to rank among the conference's top five in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and scoring offense.Â
Â
Boyette's first unit in 2013 played a pivotal role in helping Duke rank among ACC leaders in scoring (5th/32.8 ppg), total offense (4th/426.1 ypg), rushing offense (5th/178.0 ypg) and passing offense (6th/248.1 ypg). On its way to the 2013 ACC Coastal Division Championship, the Blue Devils established a school record for total points (459) while becoming the first team in school history to post 25-plus rushing touchdowns and 25-plus passing touchdowns in the same season.
Â
As a graduate assistant coach in 2012, he was part of a Blue Devil offensive staff that guided the Blue Devils to a then school single-season record 410 points as it reached a bowl game for the first time since 1994.
Â
In all, Boyette developed and coached three players who went on to NFL careers - Juwan Thompson (Denver), Shaun Wilson (Tampa Bay) and Deon Jackson (Indianapolis) and was part of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 30 Under 30 inaugural selection for the Coaches' Leadership Institute in 2015.
Â
Boyette lettered five seasons (2005-09) as a running back at Duke and served as team captain in 2008 and 2009. He rushed 314 times for 1,202 yards and five touchdowns in his career and became the 37th player in school history to reach the 1,000-yard mark on the ground. Boyette twice led the Blue Devils in rushing, in 2006 and 2007.
Â
Boyette was named to the 2008 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team and represented Duke at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La.
Â
He graduated from Duke in 2009 with a degree in sociology and is married to the former Khristen Dial of Johnson City, Tenn. The couple has one daughter, Makenna, one son, Mathias, and is expecting their third child in May.
