Troy Volleyball Falls to Wright State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Troy (0-2) falls to Wright State in three close sets , 25-20, 25-18, 25-22, inside the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena Saturday afternoon.
Four Trojans took control of the offense, Julia Brooks led with 10 kills, while Amiah Butler, Tori Hester and Sophie Sparks each had nine respectively. Janelle Stuempfig carved a path for the offense with 35 assists. With Brooks earning the team's only solo block in the match for the Trojans.
Caroline Darracott led the Troy defense with 13 digs followed closely by Sara Bates who had 10 and Jaci Mesa who was credited with nine. Bates also collected one of the squad's two aces.
Wright State (1-1) was led by Reilly Zegunis who gave the Huskies 14 kills followed by Aaliyah Byers who collected nine, and setter Katie Meyer brought 31 assists. The Husky defense saw 40 digs with 12 blocks compared to Troy's 46 digs and two blocks.
Set One
Troy and Wright State's offenses got to work early in the first set. Brooks put the Trojans on the board with a kill, 1-1. Broadhead was able to give Troy an early lead when she slammed one down 6-3. The Huskies connected on offense under Trojan errors to bring the score to 10-10. Wright State started to pull away at the 17-14 mark. Sparks got her hand on the ball to keep the Trojans within four, 20-16. Battling back Ella Broadhead connected with the ball to make the score 24-20. Wright State took the set at 25-20.
Set Two
Butler set the tone early with her first kill of the set 3-2. Hester got her hand on a ball to keep the Trojan offense alive 7-6. Troy rallied under a Julia Brooks block bringing the score to 12-8. Wright State pulled away with the lead from Trojan errors 16-10. Sparks brought the deficit down to five to bring the score to 20-15. A kill from Hester brought the score to 18-24 before Wright State wrapped up the second set at 25-18.
Set three
Wright State took control with a 4-0 lead. Sparks started a 3-0 scoring run bringing the score 7-4. Hester got her hand on the ball bringing the score to 11-10. Sparks continued her work on the net by slamming down a kill, 14-13. Wright State and Troy struggled for the lead, with an ace from Sara Bates, 17-17. Troy tied the score one last time at 22-22. Wright State capitalized on Trojan errors to win the set 25-22.

Troy will take on No. 21 Washington State Sunday morning at 10 a.m. The Cougars made it to the round of 32 in the NCAA national tournament after posting a 23-10 season.
