TROY, Ala. – In the continuation of the assessment of the Troy volleyball team, head coach Josh Lauer gives his thoughts on the middle hitter position group.
The middle hitter position group is led by returning senior Julia Brooks. With the additions of redshirt-freshman Ella Broadhead, freshman Sydney Austin and freshman Audrey Worthington look to improve the depth of the position.
In part two of a three-part series Lauer gives his thoughts on each position group, in this interview Lauer gives his thoughts on the middle hitters.
What has Julia's influence done for this younger position group?
"Julia is a great servant leader. She has bought into her role this year of being a great model for our young middle group. She has built tremendous relationships with all of them throughout the spring and summer especially with our two freshmen, Sydney and Audrey. She has a great gift at connecting with people. She sets a tremendous model for them about work ethic and how skills are supposed to be performed while encouraging them. The middle group has no bigger fan than Julia Brooks, she is for her teammates, she wants to see them be successful. That type of energy, encouragement and support from a fifth-year player like Julia is special for that group of young middles."
What have you seen out of your young middles that makes this group gel so well?
"They're open to being coached, they want to be good and help the team. They're a very unselfish group. That's one of the things that this group is a great example of for our team. They talk with one another and give each other encouragement and feedback. They want to see each other do well and be successful."
How do this group impact the team atmosphere, and what strengths do they bring to the program
"This group is our attitude and energy group; all the girls have great energy in the gym. When they're focused and having fun it's infectious throughout the gym."
