Troy Wraps Training Camp with Second Scrimmage

TROY, Ala. – Even though classes started earlier this week, Saturday marked the unofficial, official end of training camp for Troy Football as head coach Jon Sumrall led his squad through a 100-plus play scrimmage in the morning ahead of the afternoon's Fan Day festivities.
"It was a good day all-in-all," Sumrall said. "We ran a lot of plays, more plays than last week's (first scrimmage). I wanted to extend them a little bit and roll a lot of different packages and groupings in. We worked through three different two-minute situations, which was good to see us execute.
"We came out pretty healthy but still have a long way to go," Sumrall said. "We have two weeks until game one, and we have a lot of improvements to make to get game ready."
A focus of training camp has been the kicking game, where the Trojans must replace one of the most accurate kickers in program history, Brooks Buce, who in two seasons converted on 89.3 percent of his field goal attempts, the second-best mark in school history and best for kickers with 20-plus attempts.
"Zach (Long) was still limited today, so we didn't get to see him kick. He's been our starting kickoff guy and has a booming leg but has had a little bit of a muscle issue, which I don't think will be a long-term deal," Sumrall said. "ST (Scott Taylor Renfore) hit every kick today, which is pretty good; I like it when they make all of them. ST has had a really good training camp, particularly inside 45 yards where he is around 90 percent."
Sunday brings the next phase of the season as Sumrall transitions his guys from training camp and into game focus.
"Next week is what we call the mock game week where the flow and rhythm of meetings and practices look like a game week to some extent," Sumrall said. "We're not necessarily worried about a certain opponent yet; we'll still be working on ourselves, but this way, when we get into a game week, our new players understand the flow of the week. Everything we do starting tomorrow at 1 p.m. will look like a game week."
Troy opens the season two weeks from Saturday hosting Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. in The Vet.
