TROY, Ala. – Troy junior first baseman William Sullivan was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13thround of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Sullivan was the 395th overall pick in the Draft and joins teammate Zach Fruit, who Baltimore selected in Monday's ninth round, as selections in the 2023 MLB Draft.
The selections of Fruit and Sullivan mark the first time since 2018 that multiple Trojans were selected in the MLB Draft – Brandon Lockridge (5th round), Matt Sanders (10th round) and CJ Carter (29th round). It's just the third time since 2010 that multiple Troy players were chosen in the same Draft and just the second time since 2006 that two players were selected in the first 13 rounds – Mike Felix (2nd) and Tom King (8th).
"There is not a more deserving draft pick than William Sullivan," Troy head coach Skylar Meade said. "He embodied what it is to be a Troy Trojan with his power and true toughness over his four years as a Trojan. We think the Cardinals landed one of the premier power hitters in the '23 Draft. It will be fun to sit back and watch Sully's journey in professional baseball begin."
Sullivan posted a .314/.415/.624 slash line this past season for the Trojans as he played and started in 60 of Troy's 62 games during its run to the NCAA Regionals. A native of Orlando, Fla., Sullivan finished the year with 35 extra-base hits and 53 RBIs from the left side of the plate, with 17 home runs, 15 doubles and three triples. He ranked in the top 100 nationally for his home run tally.
A versatile offensive weapon for the Trojans, Sullivan ranked sixth nationally, getting hit by 25 pitches on the season in addition to ranking eighth in the country with eight sacrifice flies. He finishes his career as Troy's all-time leader after being hit by 45 pitches in his career while ranking 10th with 14 sac flies, 12th with 27 home runs and 10th with 44 doubles.
