COLUMBIA, S.C. – Through one day at the Weems Baskin Invitational on Friday, two Trojans, Cadi Rowe and Alejandra Gutierrez Fuente, stand victorious for Troy at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track.
Gutierrez Fuente became the first Trojan to hoist the gold in the long jump. The sophomore dominated the competition, outleaping 30 competitors, which included teammates Kady Schwietz and Jordan Bailey. On a new personal record, the jumper reached the 5.61m mark to outlast Delaware State's Catherine Glenn at 5.52m. Freshman Schwietz claimed her first top-five finish in her outdoor career, finishing fourth at 5.47m.
Rowe overcame a slow start in the 5,000m to outlast her 23 competitors. Through the first lap, Rowe was in second after a time of 40.365. However, she had her worst lap in the second, falling to fifth. From there, the junior marched back to retake the lead on the sixth lap and held it for the race. When she came across the line, she finished at a personal best of 17:47.04, over 10 seconds faster than South Carolina's Hayden Withers. Teanna Cason joined her with a top-10 finish, ending in seventh at 19:03.52.
The men's side would grab three top-three finishes on the day. First, Morgan Reese entered the hammer throw, reaching a season-best mark of 54.43m to finish third. Cole Stewart was next in the javelin throw, being one of two competitors to hit the 60m mark in the event for second at a season-best 60.14m. Finally, the 4x800m saw another second-place finish with Chance Armstrong, Martin Bouldo, Gabriel Peacock and Dwight Mason coming together to finish with a time of 7:45.35.
Troy returns tomorrow at 10 am. with the women's 1500m, triple jump and high jump, and men's discus throw for the final day of the Weems Baskin Invitational.
