TROY, Ala. โย In conjunction with its annual Men's Basketball Letterwinners Day, Troy Athletics will honor two of the greatest teams in program history on Saturday, February 11, when Troy plays host to Louisiana in Trojan Arena.ย Additionally, Don Maestri, head coach for both the 1993 and 2003 teams that will be honored, will be in attendance for the game.
ย
"Our men's basketball program has a rich tradition of excellence for three-quarters of a century, and we're excited to welcome back all our letterwinners in February for a special day in Trojan Arena," Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "In addition to celebrating all our amazing letterwinners, we are privileged to recognize two teams on that day that played at an elite level under legendary head coach Don Maestri. The 1993 squad, which advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game, and the 2003 team, which made the program's first appearance in March Madness, will both be recognized and honored during the game."
ย
The 1993 squad won a school-record 27 games en route to an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game against Cal State Bakersfield. Maestri's high-flying bunch topped the 100-point mark a remarkable 25 times in 32 games that season, including 15 straight games to open the year.
ย
The squad was led by Troy Sports Hall of Fame inductee and All-American Terry McCord, who averaged 24.2 points per game and shot 51.6 percent from the floor, while Chris Williams averaged 20.2 points in his debut season for the Trojans.
ย
Maestri's 2003 team made program history, earning Troy's first-ever Division I conference tournament title and a trip to March Madness. The Trojans won 14 of their final 15 games of the season leading into the NCAA Tournament, plus had non-conference victories over Arkansas and Duquesne.ย
ย
Ben Fletcher led the Trojans averaging 13.9 points per game as he earned All-Atlantic Sun First Team honors that season. Greg Davis, whose 408 career assists rank among Troy's all-time leaders, added 11.0 points, and the Trojans set a school record, which still stands today, holding opponents to just 35.9 percent shooting.
ย
All returning basketball letterwinners can receive up to four complimentary tickets to the game and are invited to an exclusive reception with their families. Letterwinners are asked to RSVP to Stephen Brown via email at rsbrown@troy.edu or by phone at 317-517-9864.ย
