Sumrall Earns First Win at Troy as Trojans Handle Bulldogs in Home Opener

TROY, Ala. – Head Troy football coach Jon Sumrall earned his first-career victory at the helm of the Trojans in Troy's commanding 38-17 victory over Alabama A&M at The Vet on Saturday night.
The Trojans get their first victory of the season and improve to 1-1 in 2022. Alabama A&M drops its second-consecutive game to begin the season after losing to UAB in week one. Troy outgained Alabama A&M 367-76 in the second and third quarters.
"I never will apologize for a win," said Sumrall. "Not the way we wanted it to happen. Extremely grateful for our fans. The turnout was really good. Part of what makes Troy so special is the fanbase and Trojan Walk today was special. Glad to see our guys get the win. I can promise you this; I am going to get it fixed. When we don't play well, that's on me. I need to get the players prepared to start faster. We have a streak of tough matchups with Marshall and App State, and if we want to beat those teams, we have to start fast. I want to be happy for the win, but we have a lot to work on, and I'm hungry to see just how good we can get."
Alabama opened the scoring late in the first quarter after neither offense was able to gain any sustained pressure. The Trojans were able to hold the Bulldogs to a field goal after Alabama A&M was threatening deep in Troy territory.
The second quarter was quiet for both teams, but Troy held Alabama A&M to just two total yards in the second quarter. The Trojans were finally able to break through on the scoreboard in the dwindling seconds of the first half as Gunnar Watson was able to find RaJae' Johnson in the endzone for the second time this season to take their first lead of the night.
Troy flipped the script in the second half and drove 75 yards down the field in 89 seconds to extend its lead to 14-3. Watson connected on his second touchdown of the day on a 40-yard pass to Deyunkrea Lewis.
It only took one play on the following drive for the Trojans to score their third touchdown of the game as Watson found Jabre Barber on a 59-yard strike across the middle of the field to put Troy ahead 21-3 early in the third quarter.
Troy got scores from Deshon Stoudemire at the end of the third quarter and a field goal from Brooks Buce early in the fourth to put the Trojans ahead 31-3 before Alabama A&M answered with a rushing touchdown midway through the final period.
First-year Trojans Jarrett Doege and Peyton Higgins connected on their first scores at Troy after Higgins took a screen play 39 yards for a score to push Troy's advantage to 38-10.

Troy will open Sun Belt Conference action next weekend as they will travel to App State for an SBC showdown in Boone, North Carolina. Kickoff from Kidd Brewer Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m.

- Sumrall earned his first-career win as the Troy head football coach after a commanding win against Alabama A&M.
- Left tackle Austin Stidham hit the half-century mark in games started for Troy as the senior netted his 50th career start.
- Troy received interceptions from Taiyon Palmer and Terry Thomas. It was Palmer's second pick of his career, while Thomas netted his first collegiate interception.
