TROY, Ala. – Coming off its second consecutive appearance in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals, the Troy men's tennis team is built for future success with the number five mid-major recruiting class and the number 38 class nationally announced by the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Troy signed two players in the offseason in Spaniards Yeray Andres Pastor and Mario Martinez Serrano. The Tennis Recruiting Network includes all teams in conferences outside of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Ivy League, Pac-12 and SEC in its mid-major rankings.
"I'm really excited about this year's recruiting class," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "I was diligent to ensure that we would be deeper in our lineup. Yeray and Mario are going to make an impact right away because they are both great players, but more importantly great people. They come with a distinct work ethic that we are looking for to help reach our goals."
Pastor, one of the top junior players at his age level in Spain, ranked as high as No. 96 in the "absolute" rankings and was ranked as high as No. 2719 in the International Tennis Federation men's rankings at age 17. This past summer, he advanced to the third round of the M15 Xativa and the second round of the M25 Denia, both ITA World Tennis Tour events.
Martinez Serrano has reached as high as No. 207 in the ITF Junior Rankings in his career (Jan. 2022) and is the sixth-ranked junior in Spain in his age group. He advanced to the finals of the J4 Grand Avignon in both singles and doubles, won the J4 Leiria Portugal in singles, and advanced to the semifinals in doubles.
Troy returns four of its starters from this past season, including first team All-Sun Belt selection Carles Anton, who posted a 20-5 record this past season and is 50-9 in dual matches in his career.
