BOONE, N.C. – The Trojan offense was on full display once again as Troy made it two wins in a row after beating the Appalachian State Mountaineers 9-2 Friday night, clinching the series from Smith Stadium.
Troy (31-22, 15-14) once again led from the start, scoring three runs in the first two innings of the ball game and three more in the eighth to seal the victory.
Brady Fuller (5-3) found himself back in the win column after going 4.2 innings of one-hit baseball allowing only one run. Fuller's only blemish of the night was his four walks which came in the fifth, giving the Mountaineers (18-32, 9-20) their first run of the night.
It was a rough night for Eli Ellington (1-3) as he lasted five batters, giving up six runs on four hits. Caleb Cross relieved him and kept the Trojans relatively quiet after going 5.2 innings, only allowing 1 hit a run with five strikeouts.
William Sullivan accounted for three of the Trojan runs on two hits giving him his 10th multi RBi game and putting him in a tie for the team lead. Kyle Mock and Caleb Bartolero continued to deal damage at the top of the lineup as each recorded a double a two runs batted in.
As he did last night, Jesse Hall began the ball game with a single, making him six for six in the series. Hall would end up going eight for eight before the Mountaineers were able to get him out. Mock followed, moving him to third, and Bartolero doubled off the top of the left-field fence to make it 1-0.
With Mock on third, Kirk made it 2-0 with a weak ground ball to second, and Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly bringing home the third Troy run.
Troy made it consecutive innings, scoring three runs as Hudson Hartsfield reached on an error and Hall was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a wild pitch and the bases were loaded after a Mock walk. Bartolero brought home his second RBI after he was hit by a pitch making it 4-0.
Sullivan's double with the bases loaded brought in two more runs to build Troy's lead to six. Sullivan is now batting .800 when the bases are full this season.
Fuller ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth as three walks were responsible for the Mountaineer's first run of the game. Grayson Stewart came in relief and escaped the bases-loaded jam, getting a fly ball to the field.
Back-to-back doubles from the hosts saw another run cross home, plate-making 6-2 in the sixth inning, but Stewart once again pitched out of the trouble and held Appalachian State to nothing else.
For the 18th time this season and leading the Sun Belt, Hall was hit by a pitch, and it came with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth to extend the lead and give him his 42 RBI of the year. Mock followed Hall with the Trojan's 13th double of the season, driving in two runs to put away the ball game.
Up Next: Troy will close out the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, May 21, at noon as they go for the series sweep and try to secure the sixth seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference tournament.
