TROY, Ala. – Behind the No. 1 defense and a pair of Craig Slocum interceptions, the White Team raced out to an early lead and dispatched the Cardinal Team, 31-10, in Troy's annual T-Day Spring Game in The Vet. Teams scored points on both offense and defense in the game as the defense scored points for things such as turnovers, three-and-outs and forced punts.
"It was a great turnout by our fans," Sumrall said. "We had a lot of events on campus today with the Fun Run, Lunch with Legends and Kids Camp, and then an opportunity to watch our guys go out and compete in our stadium and hopefully see us grow as a team. I'm encouraged by the direction we're going. We still have a long way to go, but we're headed in the right direction."
Offensively for the Trojans, Peyton Higgins caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Quayde Hawkins following Slocum's first interception of the game to extend White's lead out to 9-1. Slocum was right back in the mix with his second pick of the day on the ensuing possession. Kyle Coale booted a 48-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to push the White lead to 18-1 at the break.
"Craig Slocum is an absolute stud," Sumrall said. "He does everything the right way. He practices the right way. He puts in the effort the right way. You walk out the building at night, and he's in there watching tape. He's a former walk-on who has worked extremely hard at his craft to become the kind of player he is."
Redshirt freshman running back Jarris Williams put together a quality second half for the White squad with runs of 15 and 33 yards before punching in a 2-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter.
On the other side of the ball, Carloss Crawford forced a fumble and intercepted a pass from his safety position for the Cardinal Team, while Markeis Colvin added an interception late in the fourth quarter.
"It was a clean game by our guys," Sumrall said. "They really did a good job in playing the game the right way and protecting the team. Phillip Lee made a really big stop on a third-down play, and he's really grown a lot at bandit, really taken some steps forward. Saw Devante Ross, a young receiver, make a big catch, and convert a third down. Hard to single out guys because so many guys did step up and show production."
Following the game, sophomore safety Keyshawn Swanson made the play of the day as he was placed on scholarship by Sumrall in a surprise visit from his parents.
"Keyshawn is another great example of a walk-on who has come here and done everything the right way," Sumrall said. "He absolutely dominates in the offseason workouts, he is a team leader, the guys love him, and he's the kind of guy you want on your side."
T-Day was the last of 15 spring practices for Sumrall's squad, and they now shift back into offseason mode for the next three weeks before the end of the semester.
