TROY, Ala. – Troy sophomore Carles Anton has been named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis First Team in singles; the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. Anton finished the year with the second-best winning percentage in the league (min. 11 results) to bring his second straight All-Sun Belt honor.
"Carles had an outstanding season, which started with a strong fall beating a player from LSU and continued into the spring with a win over a ranked player from Miami," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "He played at a high level in the spring and has been consistent throughout the season. Carles is very resilient on the course and plays with a killer instinct; his self-confidence is one of his best traits."
Anton, who was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and a second team selection last season, posted an 18-5 record during the dual part of the schedule, including a 4-1 mark in Sun Belt action. He ended the season winning seven of his final eight matches of the year after opening the season with wins in seven of his first eight matches.
Two of his five losses came in three sets, including a thriller at No. 24 Florida State. Anton entered the season slotted in the regional rankings earning him a spot in the ITA All-American Championships and a berth in the main draw of the ITA Southern Regional, where he knocked off LSU's Gabriel Diaz Freire.
The native of Valencia, Spain, finished the season with a .783 winning percentage in singles, second only to Louisiana's Orio Fillat Gimenez (.800), who played at No. 3 for the Cajuns.
Troy opens play at the Sun Belt Championship Thursday against fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina. First serve is set for 9 a.m. in Peachtree City, Ga.
