TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Trojan offense couldn't find its groove all afternoon as Alabama beat Troy 8-1 from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Crimson Tide starting pitcher Jacob McNairy didn't allow a Troy (5-4) baserunner through the first six innings, sending the first 19 Trojan hitters down in order.
William Sullivan stepped into the batter's box in the top of the seventh with one out and ripped a first-pitch single to left field to become the first Trojan to reach base.
McNairy (2-0) brought his best stuff as he went a career-high seven innings pitched and struck out seven batters for Alabama (6-4).
For the fifth time this season, Troy saw themselves playing from behind after the first inning as Alabama scored two runs after a triple, single, and double in succession saw the Crimson Tide off to an early lead.
Troy starter Grayson Stewart (2-1) only saw one inning of work in his first collegiate start, giving up two earned runs on three hits with a walk and striking out one.
Troy saw their bullpen get to work early as Logan Ross relieved Stewart, going two innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three.
The first four innings saw Alabama score at least one run, which was capped off by a Zen Denton homerun.
Keaton Fuller, Ryan Pettys, Judson Hershiser Dillon Cook, and senior Rigsby Mosley made pitching appearances out of the bullpen. Mosley, who has patrolled the Trojan outfield for the past four seasons, got his first pitching appearance in the Trojan uniform, and he recorded two outs on nine pitches, including a strikeout.
In the top of the ninth, after three consecutive hits, Sullivan was able to break up the shutout after a single to center field scored Trey Leonard for the Trojan's lone run of the ballgame.
Up Next: Troy returns home for a three-game series with Kennesaw State beginning on Friday, March 4, at 6 p.m.
