Troy Women’s Basketball Earns Sole Possession of Conference Title

CONWAY, S.C. – The Troy Women's Basketball squad claimed sole possession of the Sun Belt Championship after powering past Coastal Carolina, 71-58, Saturday at the HTC Center.
Felmas Koranga led the Trojans (22-7, 13-2 Sun Belt) with 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. The junior also grabbed 12 boards, good for her 13th double-double of the season.
For Coastal Carolina (14-10, 4-9 Sun Belt), Aja Blount tallied 20 points to lead all scorers.
How It Happened
The Trojans and Chanticleers battled toe-to-toe through the opening six minutes of action; Blount made a pair of free throws at 4:10 mark to make it a one-point game, 9-8, in favor of the Trojans. With 3:33 to play, Felmas Koranga kickstarted an 11-0 run for the Trojans that saw them up 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Troy held onto a double-digit lead through the entirety of the second quarter. Koranga kickstarted the scoring yet again with a jumper to gain a 14-point lead at the 8:56 mark. After the Chanticleers cut the lead back to 10, Za'Nautica Downs banked in a jumper just before the media timeout to gain a 30-18 lead. Troy's lead increased to as many as 19 with a jumper from Ja'Mia Hollings, but a pair of Chanticleer free throw cut the Trojan advantage to 39-22 at the half.
After the Chanticleers knocked down the first two shots of the third period, the Trojans went on a 6-0 run to take a 45-27 lead with 4:53 to go. After both sides traded buckets through the winding minutes of the third, Blount connected on a free throw to set up a 53-35 score heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Jhileiya Dunlap gave the Trojans an early 20-point advantage with a layup at the 8:50 mark, but a 6-0 run for Coastal Carolina cut the lead back to 14. After a Troy timeout, the Trojans quickly ballooned their lead back 20 points with a Koranga layup at the 3:31 mark. The two squads traded makes through the final three minutes, setting up a 71-58 final.
