Leanna Johnson Tabbed Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

TROY, Ala. – After an impressive 2-0 performance on opening weekend, Leanna Johnson has been tabbed the first Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week of 2022, the league announced on Tuesday.

The Sun Belt Preseason Pitcher of the Year quickly proved worthy of the honors after going 2-0 during opening weekend. Johnson picked up both of her wins against Southern Illinois, who made an NCAA Regional last season.

"I'm super proud of Leanna for earning this honor," co-interim head coach Holly Ward said. "Leanna threw lights out this weekend. She always gives us a chance to win when she's in the circle. She's a fighter and an incredible competitor for our team."

The junior saw her first action of the season on Friday when she entered in relief in the fifth inning against College of Charleston. Johnson recorded every out of her three innings via strikeout.

Johnson then took to the circle in Friday's nightcap with the Missouri Valley champions, Southern Illinois, where she fanned 11 Salukis en route to her first win of the weekend.

On Saturday, Troy's ace again downed Southern Illinois, posting eight strikeouts, to cap off a perfect 2-0 start to the 2022 campaign.

On the weekend, Johnson recorded a 1.24 ERA with 28 strikeouts over just 17 innings of work. The Brantley, Ala. native pinned opponents to a .094 opposing batting average.

Johnson and the Trojans return to action on the road Wednesday against in-state foe UAB. First pitch from Mary Bowers Field is set for 6 p.m.
