JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Alyssa Mercado rocketed up the leaderboard in Tuesday's final round of the First Coast Classic, shooting a 2-over 74 to climb seven spots into 12th place. Troy slid one spot on the team board into sixth place overall in the Trojans' second spring event.
Mercado, who was playing as an individual meaning her score didn't count towards Troy's team card, carded three birdies on the day and played in the red for six holes before a trio of bogeys towards the end of her round pushed her card over par. Mercado's 74 came on a day when the average round turned in was a 79.79 on the 6,002-yard course at the Deerwood Country Club.
Eastern Kentucky rallied past Western Kentucky to claim a 9-shot victory over Arkansas State, while the Hilltoppers slid to third. Troy led the field in par-3, scoring at +22 for the tournament and ranked second with 146 pars but finished towards the bottom of the field with only 24 birdies.
Elisabeth Preus also made a final day move up the leaderboard as she climbed 11 spots into a tie for 16th place following a 4-over 76 in Tuesday's third round. Preus, who was third in the field on the par-3 holes at 2-over, raced out to 4-under par on Tuesday with birdies on four of her first seven holes.
Bruna Roqueta, Troy's clubhouse leader following Monday, slipped into a tie for 19th after shooting 14-over on Tuesday, while ShaeLee Scarberry tied for 24th place after an 8-over 80 despite rolling off three birdies over a four-hole stretch. Roqueta was second among the field playing the par-3 holes to the tune of 1-over and tied for sixth at 8-over on the par-4 holes.
Anna Claire Little moved up six positions into a tie for 34th after carding three birdies and avoiding anything worse than a bogey on Tuesday to shoot 77 and Elizabeth Caldarelli rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 41st place at 10-over on the day.
The Trojans are off for a few weeks before heading back to Jacksonville on March 7-8 for the Benbow Invitational hosted by Butler at the Jacksonville Beach Country Club.
