TROY, Ala. – The architect of one of the nation's top defenses, Troy defensive coordinator Shiel Wood is a nominee for the Broyles Award, presented annually to college football's top assistant coach since 1996.
In his first season at Troy, Wood has led the Trojans to one of the best defensive seasons in both program and Sun Belt Conference history. The Trojans have allowed just 167 points and 20 touchdowns this season; it is the second-fewest points and touchdowns allowed through 10 games in Troy's DI history. At the conference level, the tallies rank as the second-fewest in Sun Belt history by just six points and one touchdown.
Troy is one of just two teams since 2000 to win two games when scoring 10 or fewer points and one of seven to win four or more games when scoring 17 or fewer points. Last week, the Trojans defeated Army, 10-9, and they defeated South Alabama, 10-6, on Oct. 20.
Despite facing the nation's second and third-ranked rushing attacks, Troy ranks ninth in scoring defense, 25thin total defense, 34th in passing defense and 40th in rushing defense.
Just last week, linebacker Carlton Martial recorded 22 tackles in the win over Army, was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and in the process set the NCAA FBS record for career tackles.
A veteran defensive coach, Wood joined the Troy staff following two years at Army in addition to stints at Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Wofford.
Semifinalists for the Broyles Award will be announced on Nov. 22, with finalists set for Nov. 29. The recipient of the award will be unveiled on Dec. 6 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
