Â
TROY, Ala. – The Troy Cheerleading squad finished in sixth place at the Universal Cheerleaders Associations Small Coed Division IA competition that took place at Walt Disney World in Orlando this past weekend. The finish was Troy's best in-person result at the event since 2017; the Trojans finished third last year in a virtual format.
Â
Troy Athletics will honor the cheerleading squad at the men's basketball game against South Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 29, in Trojan Arena.
Â
"Our long-awaited trip back to the live nationals' stage was nothing short of a fairy tale," head coach Nic Laracuente said. "Having the honor to not only wear the Troy University uniform on the Nationals' stage again but also to make our first appearance in the finals since 2017 shows how special this team truly is. Our theme this year was overcoming adversity, and this team has done that over and over again with grace and positivity. I am so proud of this team and their growth, but I am most proud that through all the adversity, their number one priority was to represent their school that they love in a positive light."
Â
Competing against schools from across the country, Troy qualified in fifth position following the 11-team preliminary round. Troy finished ahead of Florida State, App State, Minnesota, San Diego State, New Mexico and Syracuse to advance to the finals.
Â
"Trojan Nation is beaming with pride for what our Troy Cheerleaders were able to accomplish this past weekend in Orlando,"Â Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "Congratulations to head coach Nic Laracuente and our entire cheer program for a tremendous performance at the UCA Nationals. We look forward to honoring them in front of a large crowd of Trojan fans at our upcoming men's basketball game against South Alabama."
