TROY, Ala. – Troy women's basketball head coach Chanda Rigby announced the signing of Tina Stephens, a transfer from the University of Kansas, to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday. Stephens, who is taking advantage of the free year granted by the NCAA, will join the team for the 2021-22 season.
Tina Stephens | 6-2 | Forward | Palmetto, Fla. | University of Kansas | Florida Southwestern College
Get To Know Tina Stephens
Stephens, a highly sought-after student-athlete her entire career, chose Troy over nationally ranked Rutgers and Ole Miss. In two seasons at Kansas, Stephens averaged 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while shooting just under 50 percent from the floor. She also recorded 62 career steals, 44 assists and 13 blocked shots. She scored a career-high 22 points against Kansas St. (Jan. 23) this past season while setting a career mark of 17 rebounds against Iowa State last season (March 3). She earned her lone double-double of the year on Jan. 27 against Oklahoma when she scored 19 points and hauled in 10 boards, while recording seven double-doubles in her career. Before attending Kansas, she played two seasons at Florida Southwestern College in Fort Myers, Fla. She was ranked as the No. 24 overall junior college player and the eighth overall forward in the 2019 class. She was named a First Team All-American and a two-time Sun Coast Conference Player of the Year. As a sophomore she averaged 20.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and set the single-season record for points scored with 527. After completing her time at Florida Southwestern, she chose Kansas over Oklahoma State and Pitt.
Rigby On Stephens
"Tina is a huge addition to our Trojan women's basketball family. We are focused on repeating as Sun Belt Champions and making a run in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Tina has the ability, and talent, to help us do this, and she is bought in to our goals. I'm blessed to have her join us on our mission."
Troy is coming off its third Sun Belt Tournament Championship, fourth overall Sun Belt Title, and its third NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Chanda Rigby. Troy made national headlines in the NCAA Tournament against No. 2 seed Texas A&M when they erased a 16-point deficit to lead the Aggies late in the fourth quarter before narrowly falling to the Aggies by just four points. Troy's 80-points scored was the third-most points scored by a 15 seed in NCAA tournament history.
