TROY, Ala. – With just three days until the start of the 2021 season, head coach Beth Mullins returns the heart of her lineup from a year ago to power the Trojans offensively.
"We have a really talented team," head coach Beth Mullins said. "I think this is one of the most, if not the most, talented teams I have coached in a long time. We have probably the best offense we've had since I've been here. I am really just excited to get back out there."
The Trojans lineup is fueled by a trio of 2021 Preseason All- Sun Belt team members including Katie Webb, who returned for her fifth season with the Trojans.
"Having Katie Webb back for a fifth year is a blessing," Mullins said. "Katie is going to continue to hold that spot in the middle of our lineup, and I am excited to see what she does with her extra year."
Webb, and fellow all-conference selection Kelly Horne, led the team in batting in 2020. The duo hit 368 mark over the shortened (22 games) 2020 season. The two combined for 46 hits, nine doubles, four home runs and 28 RBIs.
Katie Lively joined Webb and Horne on the Preseason All-Sun Belt team. The outfielder hit .365 and smashed a team-leading eight doubles, the second most two-base hits in the Sun Belt. Lively also added three home runs, 14 RBIs and 41 total bases (fourth-most in the conference) to her stat line.
Two standout newcomers, Candela Figueroa and Jade Sinness, from a year ago return to the Trojans in 2021, adding speed and depth to the Trojans' lineup.
Figueroa dominated the base paths stealing a league-leading 13 bases (13-for-15) while Sinness smashed the second-most long balls in the Sun Belt (six).
Alongside veterans Logan Calhoun and Kaylee Chapman, the Trojans welcomed four true freshmen to round out the already powerful line up (Ashlan Ard, Kennedi Gaton, Jill Robinson and Audra Thompson).
"These really talented freshmen have really added to our depth," Mullins said. "I think you can expect to see some of them out on the field this spring."
Troy kicks off the 2021 season this Friday, February 12 at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans will take on Ole Miss at 2 p.m. followed by a matchup with Chattanooga to close out opening day.
