TROY, Ala. – Troy triumphed in an exciting series-opening game against Jacksonville on a beautiful Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans and Dolphins exchanged runs early, but Troy eventually separated itself to win, 6-3.
Six of Troy's eight hits on the night went for extra bases, all of which were doubles. Rigsby Mosley and Drew Frederic combined to go 5-for-8 with four doubles and three RBIs at the top of the batting order.
Kyle Mock recorded the seventh double, and 10th extra-base hit, of his career while Logan Cerny hit his third double of the year.
Orlando Ortiz notched the win on the mound after he allowed two earned runs in six innings and struck out six while walking none. Marquez Oates, Lance Johnson and Mason Kenney each pitched an inning out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit combined. Kenney earned his first save as a Trojan after he retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Mock's double got the Trojans on the board first before a sac-fly from Easton Kirk eventually brought him home to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead after two frames. Jacksonville responded immediately, however, with a pair of runs in the top half of the third to tie the game.
An infield single by Caleb Bartolero, his first hit of the season, brought Frederic home to regain the lead. Once again, the Dolphins had an answer with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
Mosley's first double in the bottom of the fourth gave Troy a 4-3 lead before the pitchers went to work for the next couple innings. Back-to-back doubles from Mosley and Frederic after the stretch gave the Trojans a pair of insurance runs and a 6-3 advantage.
Tyler Santana was tagged with the loss for Jacksonville after he allowed five runs on six hits in six innings.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It was a good start to the weekend, we played very well tonight. We made a couple of mistakes defensively but I thought we competed very well. I'm really proud of Orlando Ortiz battling through six innings and establishing the lead. It's good to get off to a 1-0 start on the weekend, but we'll certainly have to continue to play better in order to win this series. It's always good to win on Friday night."
