TROY, Ala. – Troy overcame an error-filled start to defeat in-state foe UAB in an exciting matchup Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans, despite four errors, downed the Blazers by a score of 10-3.
William Sullivan recorded his second multi-RBI game of the season with an impressive 3-for-3 night at the plate. All of the first baseman's hits – two doubles and a home run – went for extra bases. Sun Belt Player of the Week Logan Cerny continued his impressive start to the year, recording a pair of sac-flies in his 1-for-2, two-RBI night at the plate.
Troy (4-1, 0-0 SBC) committed three errors before UAB's third batter came up to bat in the first inning, but the Trojans were able to limit the damage to one run in the opening frame. Starting Blazer pitcher Austin Bohannon gave the Troy batters trouble early, but a solo shot to left from Sullivan tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning.
UAB (2-2, 0-0 C-USA) regained a one-run lead in the fourth inning, before an RBI single by Nic Nolan scored Cerny and tied the game.
Kyle Mock, who entered the game as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded, swung the game in Troy's favor with a bases-clearing triple deep into left-center field. The next at-bat, Cerny then drove his first sac-fly of the evening to left field to score Mock and extend Troy's lead to 6-3.
Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Trojans to open the seventh frame before Sullivan smoked a two-RBI double off the center field wall. A passed ball then scored Caleb Bartolero before Cerny's second sac-fly of the night brought Sullivan home.
Kyle Gamble, in his first career start on the mound, gave up only one earned run and struck out six, but it was Marquez Oates who tallied the win for the Trojans. Oates (1-0) pitched three innings in relief, gave up no runs, walked none and struck out three to improve to 4-0 in his career.
Jonah Smith (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Blazers after allowing four runs on four hits in two innings pitched.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It was a great start to the midweek season, I'm really proud of our team. It was a solid 10-3 win over a solid UAB team. We didn't start how I'd like to, we made some errors early, but we didn't panic. Gamble did a great job; he was very poised throughout his outing. Things were caving in around him and he kept throwing quality pitches. After the early mistakes, I thought we played a very good baseball game."
