TROY, Ala. – Troy Volleyball's season ends after the Trojans fell in three straight sets to North Florida in the NIVC tournament (25-19, 25-19, 25-14) from Trojan Arena Saturday afternoon.
Troy finishes the 2021 season 18-13 and 9-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. Troy protected home court with a 7-5 record at Trojan Arena and saw a winning record on the road finishing 8-4.
"It was another very successful season for our team," head coach Josh Lauer said. "I am extremely grateful for and proud of our players. Their effort throughout the season and commitment to caring about one another was fun to coach. I am also so appreciative of our seniors and their families. Their contributions over the last 4-5 years have been unforgettable. They believed in Building the Empire and have left a wonderful legacy for our returners and incoming players. The future is very bright, and the best is yet to come for Troy Volleyball."
Senior Cheyenne Hayes led the way for the Trojans (18-13) once again after she recorded a team-high nine kills and finished with six digs. Amara Anderson finished with 23 assists. The Trojans had 21 errors and only hit .069 in the match.
North Florida (25-7) was led by Darian Santana-Hollingsworth, who had a match-high 11 kills. Julianna Askew finished with 27 assists to lead all players, and Rocio Moro had 15 digs.
Set 1: In set one, the Trojans were attacking early as they would get out to a 7-4 lead after an Anderson service ace. North Florida would score the next six points to flip the score 12-7 in favor of the Ospreys. Despite having 11 total kills in the set, which was the most of any of the three for the Trojans, the lead was too much to overcome as Troy would only ever get within three in the set.
Set 2: Ending 25-19 just as set one did, the Trojans found themselves battling from behind as the score was only tied three times, and The Trojan's last lead in the set was 3-2. Hayes led the way in the set with five kills, and Ashley Guenveur came in and contributed three kills. Trojans got within two points late in the set, but the Ospreys could go on a three-point run to stifle the Trojan come back and go up two sets to none.
Set 3: Troy wouldn't go down without a fight as they looked to extend the match. They led 9-8 but could not extend it as a four-point North Florida Run forced the Trojans to call a timeout. Attack and service errors continued to hurt the Trojans as North Florida would jump out to their largest lead of the match at 20-12 and score 5 of the last six points to win and advance in the NIVC tournament.
