TROY, Ala. – Led by an outstanding 81 points from the Trojan bench, the Troy Women's Basketball team toppled in-state foe UAH, 107-57, Wednesday night in Trojan Arena.
Amber Leggett led all scorers with 29 points after coming off the bench; it marks her second contest with 20-plus points as a Trojan. Troy's (6-5) lone true freshman Gabbi Cartagena also recorded a career night in the cardinal and white. The guard came off the bench and ignited for 16 points.
The Chargers (1-7) were led by Jirah Rogers, who posted 14 points and six rebounds.
How It Happened
The Trojans and Chargers battled toe-to-toe through the opening four minutes of play before Sharonica Hartsfield kickstarted a 6-0 run to give Troy a three-point lead, 11-8, with 6:11 to go in the first. Another 6-0 run, capped off by a layup from Ja'Mia Hollings with 14 seconds to play in the opening period, ballooned Troy's lead to 11, 28-16.
After a quiet opening to the second quarter, a 7-0 run with 2:25 of action left to go brought the Chargers back within six; however, the Trojans, sparked by an and-one from Amber Leggett, closed out the quarter on an 8-0 stretch to keep a double-digit lead, 44-31, heading into the break.
Troy's dominate performance continued into the third quarter of action, where the Trojans outscored UAH 29-13. Both sides traded score before Za'Nautica Downs drained a fast break triple to jump start a 14-2 that ended that stretched from 4:58 mark to the end of the quarter.
The Trojan lead steadily grew throughout the remaining 10 minutes of action after Tina Stephens scored six points in the opening three minutes. A 10-0 run capped off by another Downs three-pointer solidified Troy's 107-57 victory.
Quotable – Head Coach Chanda Rigby
"The team had a lot of determination in the second half. After the emotional win over Middle Tennessee, in my opinion, we didn't have a great two practices leading into tonight. I'm glad we were able to shake that off in the second half. UAH did a great job with some players out injured and really were able to affect us in the first half."
