Troy Wraps Successful Day One of Fall Camp

TROY, Alabama – Friday marked Troy's first official football practice since March 5 when the Trojans were shut down just five practices into their spring season due to COVID-19. Chip Lindsey's squad didn't look like it missed a beat with a solid 19-period day on the grass practice fields behind Trojan Arena.
"First day in the books and it felt great to be back," Lindsey said. "It's just the first day of camp, and we only had helmets on, but it was really good to see them move around. With all of the guidelines and protocols we have in place, combined with the limited amount of time we had during spring camp, we tried to adjust practice some and go between full speed and walk-thrus."
In helmets and shorts for the first of two acclimation days due to NCAA rules, the Trojans ran through their normal practice regiment with special teams, 7-on-7, individual drills and 1-on-1 position work before ending with 11-on-11 team drills.
"Today we tried to teach a bit more than we have in the past," Lindsey said. "I think the practice schedule will continue to be flexible depending on where I think we are as a team. I was really pleased with the shape we were in and how we finished practice. Nobody had to leave early or come out due to the heat. Our attitude has been good all spring and summer and I think the walk-thrus allowed us to get ahead. I'm excited to get started and overall it was a great first day. I'm very pleased."
All eyes were on the quarterbacks where Jacob Free, Parker McNeil, Kyle Toole and Gunnar Watson all entered fall camp listed on the top line of the depth chart. Troy is one of 13 schools across the country with zero returning starts at the quarterback position; however, the Trojans are loaded with talent at the position.Day one through the lens

"I'd like to announce (the starter) two weeks before the opener so whomever the starter is has a chance to work with our first team offense all the time and build that relationship," Lindsey said. "Our depth and how many different wide receiver options we have might make that adjustment a bit easier, but the communication is important. The guy that will be our starter, first will be the guy that leads our team the best and moves the offense up and down the field. It won't be based purely on completions and stats; it will be about who leads our team the best. That's what I'm looking for."
In what is always the highlight of fall camp, walk-ons Trey Coryell, Micah Murphy and Craig Slocum were presented with a scholarship from Lindsey following practice.🔊 We've got sound from some of the players following today's fall camp opener.#DTW | #OneTROY ⚔️🏈 pic.twitter.com/9P5rHrtkUZ

"It meant a lot. I came to Troy in the same class as Craig Slocum, I've known Micah (Murphy) a long time, and then I'm really good friends with Trey Coryell," Troy's All-American linebacker, and former walk-on, Carlton Martial said. "Those guys earned those scholarships. I'm really happy for them, and I know when I get back in the locker room, we're going to be celebrating those guys."
The Trojans return to work Saturday at 8:40 a.m. for their second practice of camp; Troy will go every day leading up to the first day of classes Wednesday.
