TROY, Alabama – Despite playing in just one full game last season due to injury, Troy senior running back B.J. Smith has been named to the watch list for the 84th annual Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Friday. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football.
Â
Smith, the 2019 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, missed the bulk of last season due to a knee injury sustained in the first quarter of Troy's second game. In his lone full game, Smith rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.
Â
In 2018, Smith rushed for 1,186 yards which ranked second, by one yard, for the entire season; he was the league's leading rusher during the regular season. Smith's 13 rushing touchdowns were the sixth most in a season in Troy history and were the most among running backs in the league.
Â
Smith, who was also named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List,  set a school record after rushing for more than 100 yards in five straight games as he averaged 141.3 yards per game during the month of October; the fifth most in the country. Smith finished the season averaging 91.23 yards per game, which ranked him 34th nationally in the category. He posted a season-high 170 yards on just 22 carries in Troy's victory at South Alabama in the "Battle for the Belt" and scored twice in Troy's win at Nebraska.
Â
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sports writer and football official.
