TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team has been selected as a recipient of the 2019-20 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the AVCA announced Monday. The Trojans were also named to the Team Academic Honor Roll which signifies a top-46 combined team GPA among Division I schools.
This marks the second year in a row Troy has received both honors.
"Our players continue to set and pursue tremendous goals and I am extremely happy to see their hard work get recognized," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Their success on the court this past year was absolutely paralleled in the classroom. I could not be prouder of their dedication to be their best both on and off the court."
The team recorded a 3.73 GPA during the 2019-20 academic year, up from 3.62 just a year ago. Nine Trojans posted a 4.0 GPA in the spring 2020 semester despite being faced with an unprecedented crisis.
A record total of 227 Division I schools were selected as recipients of the award, but only 46 were named to the Team Academic Honor Roll.
"Our academic advisor Cody Ash has done a great job helping each one of our players pursue their passions academically," Lauer said. "He has been an integral part of our success in the classroom and continues to be a wonderful mentor to our players. Achieving this award for the second year in a row shows that our players continue to be consistently committed to excellence as student-athletes."
On the court, Troy also experienced one of the best seasons in school history after finishing with a 23-10 record and the program's first-ever postseason bid, a trip to the NIVC. The Trojans' +12 win differential from 2018 to 2019 tied for the sixth-best turnaround in NCAA Division I last season.
