Football Sprints Through First Spring Practice

TROY, Ala. – Tuesday had a different feeling on the turf inside Veterans Memorial Stadium. A new energy surrounded the Troy football team as the Trojans went through their first spring practice of the year.Â
Â
"I thought overall it was a really good day," head coach Chip Lindsey said. "It was good to see the new guys out there running around. Defensively, I thought we ran to the ball well and competed in the 7-of-7 drills; you can tell that some of the guys in here now are going to be able to help us. That was an area of need for us in the secondary and we addressed that."
Â
The Trojans spent two hours Tuesday morning in The Vet after heavy rains Monday washed out the Trojans from using the practice fields behind Trojan Arena. The early wake-up call was a new wrinkle for the Trojans, but a welcomed one for Lindsey.
Â
"For us, it's getting them up early, getting them activated and getting them rolling," Lindsey said. "It makes a lot of things better including class attendance and it's a good change up for us too. In the fall, you get used to that schedule and now in the spring we do it a little different. We'll see how it goes whether we want to do it in the fall too."
Â
The quarterbacks were firmly in the spotlight on day one with sophomore Gunnar Watson, junior Parker McNeil and sophomore Jacob Cendoya drawing some early praise.
Â
"Without watching the film, I thought they all had flashes of doing well," Lindsey said. "For Parker, it was the first time going through our install, so I was excited with how well he picked up the communication. He made a few nice throws and you can tell he has the arm talent. Gunnar was solid and Jacob Cendoya was a bright spot – he's a walk-on who has some talent.
Â
"We have a competition for sure, and we won't name a starter until the fall."
Â
Troy will be back to work Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in helmets and shorts before moving to shells for Saturday's practice.
