TROY, Ala. – Troy improved to 8-1 on the year with its second shutout of the season, 5-0, Tuesday night over Alabama State. The Trojans are off to the best start in the Mark Smartt era heading into a weekend series against No. 1 Florida.
Rigsby Mosley, who went 3-4 at the plate with a home run and a double, registered his sixth multi-hit game of the season. The junior increased his career-long hitting streak to 15 games dating back to last year. William Sullivan went 3-3 and recorded his first, and Troy's third, triple of the year.
Bay Witcher earned the start on the mound and struck out two in 4.2 innings, but it was Marquez Oates that got credit for the win and improved his record to 3-0 on the year. The pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the night, Troy's sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the year.
Mosley wasted no time getting the Trojans on the board, opening the game with a 332 ft. solo shot over the right-field wall in Troy's first at-bat. Mosley recorded his second RBI of the game in the second inning with a single through the left side to score Jesse Hall from second base.
Drew Frederic hit a two-RBI single hard up the middle with the bases loaded to score Sullivan and Kyle Mock. Taylor Pridgen added one more insurance run in the eighth with a sac fly to bring Sullivan home from third.
Jeremy Rivera (2-1) suffered his first loss on the mound this season as the Hornets drop to 6-2 on the year.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Really solid performance tonight. We played well in every phase. We did some good things offensively, but the main thing was that we pitched well. Bay Witcher did a great job starting the game and then the bullpen was terrific behind him."
