TROY, Ala. – Troy women's basketball was picked to win both the Sun Belt Conference and the Sun Belt's East Division by the League's head coaches, the Sun Belt announced Thursday.
The Trojans, who won the 2019-20 Sun Belt Conference Championship, earned nine of the possible 12 first-place votes and led the conference with 140 points to claim the top spot in the East Division and the overall League standings. This is the second time since 2016-17 that Troy has been picked to win the conference and the fifth time under head coach Chanda Rigby that Troy has been picked to finish in the top three. Since 2012 no team has earned more first-place votes or had a higher point total than Troy this season.
Rounding out the East Division was South Alabama, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, Georgia State and Georgia Southern. In the West Division UTA grabbed the top spot followed by Louisiana, Little Rock, Arkansas State, Texas State and ULM.
This is the first time since the 2012-13 season that the Sun Belt split its 12 teams into two divisions. Due to Covid-19, teams will only play teams in their division. Teams will play four members of their division four times each with games being played on Friday's and Saturday's. Rivalry games will be played just twice in a home-and-home format, on a Thursday and Saturday of the same week.
On Wednesday, Troy landed three student-athletes on Preseason All-Sun Belt teams. Senior forward Alexus Dye was named to the preseason first team, senior guard Jasmine Robinson was named to the second team and junior transfer Felmas Koranga was named to the third team. Troy's three representatives were a league high.
