Â
TROY, Ala. – Armed with the one of the most experienced receiving corps in the country, one of the top 35 players in the country and a full-fledged quarterback battle, Troy head coach Chip Lindsey announced Friday the Trojans' 15 practice dates for the spring.
Â
"We're all itching to get back on the field and get a fresh taste of football in our mouths," Lindsey said. "Our players are putting in tremendous effort and work in the weight room with Coach Whitt, and we are all eager to transition that energy to the football field for spring practice. We've got a hungry football team, a football team that is ready to put in the work necessary to answer the call each week during the season."
Â
Lindsey will split his practice sessions around Troy's spring break with five practices followed by a week off in early March. The meat of the practices will take place over the final two-plus weeks of the month leading to the annual T-Day Spring Game on April 4 – full details for T-Day will be announced at a later time.
Â
In Lindsey's first season, the Trojans put together one of the top offensive units in country with a top-25 scoring offense (33.8 points per game) and top-18 overall offense (456.3 yards per game). The second-year head coach will have to find a new signal caller following the departure of Kaleb Barker, but whoever wins the role will have a deep group of receivers to throw to.Â
Â
The Trojans return three players who caught at least five touchdown passes in 2019 paced by Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year Kaylon Geiger's 77 catches for 873 yards and five scores. Khalil McClain led the group with seven touchdowns while Reggie Todd found the end zone five times.
Â
Defensively, the Trojans will build around two-time All-American Carlton Martial. The junior linebacker was named the No. 35 player in college football this past season by Pro Football Focus after becoming just the 13th player in the last 20 years to finish a season with 100-plus tackles, 15-plus tackles for loss and three-plus interceptions.
Â
Martial will have reinforcements as Terence Dunlap, Monte' McGary, Richard Jibunor and Jayden McDonald are all eligible to play in 2020 after sitting out last season, in addition to Freshman All-America safety Dell Pettus and All-Sun Belt defensive tackle Will Choloh returning for 2020.
Â
"These 15 spring practices are a jumpstart on the fall for the guys that are here right now, and they need to take advantage of those opportunities," Lindsey said. "I'm looking for leaders to emerge and take ownership of their team on the field, in the weight room and in the locker room."
