TROY, Ala. – Amara Anderson and Julia Brooks have both received Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. Anderson was named Setter of the Week while Brooks was named Freshman of the Week.
This is the fifth time in Anderson's career and third time in the last four weeks she has received the honor. Brooks is the first Trojan to garner freshman of the week honors since 2014. Anderson and Brooks have been essential in Troy's best start to a season since the school went Division I in 1993.
"Both Julia and Amara work extremely hard every day and bring out the best in each other and their teammates," head coach Josh Lauer said.
Anderson has placed herself among the top setters in the country so far this season. Her 11.39 assists per set leads the conference and ranks 10th nationally.
The sophomore's all-tournament weekend included a pair of double-doubles and was only a dig shy of a third. Anderson registered 38 assists and 10 digs against The Citadel and 37 assists and 12 digs against Florida A&M.
"Amara continues to show she is an elite volleyball player, not just a great setter," Lauer said.
Brooks had a monster weekend en route to earning MVP honors at the Trojan Classic. The freshman was incredibly efficient offensively, hitting .438 against The Citadel and .520 against Southern. Brooks also recorded a career-high 17 kills against Southern.
The St. Louis, Mo., native made her presence felt at the net defensively with nine total blocks on the weekend.
"Julia's performance this weekend was stellar," Lauer said. "She has been building to a breakout performance all season and for it to happen at home before the start of conference play was really fun to see."
Troy returns to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as the Trojans host Arkansas State to open conference play.
