TROY, Ala. – Troy picked up a gritty win Friday night in Trojan Arena as the Trojans took down Citadel, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-21). The Bulldogs kept things interesting throughout the match, but the Trojans used the home-court to their advantage to complete the sweep.
Three Trojans hit .400 or better offensively as Halston Hillier (.476), Julia Brooks (.438) and Caitlin Cooper (.400) all posted impressive nights. Amara Anderson added 38 assists for the Trojans.
Defensively, Anderson (10) and Jacey Jeffcoat (11) each posted double digit digs. Brooks added a monster performance at the net to her well-rounded night with 4.5 total blocks.
"We were gritty tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We were a little up and down, but sometimes you have to win those tough ones. It was great to be back in Trojan Arena after a long road trip."
How It Happened
Hillier and Brooks paced Troy (8-2) in the opening set of the match with four kills apiece. Things were tight early, but Troy eventually pulled away to take the set, 25-16.
The Citadel wouldn't go away in the second set, however, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-10 lead. Troy responded with a timely 7-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. The Trojans never looked back on their way to winning the set, 25-20.
Things remained tight in the final set as Troy found itself in a 19-15 deficit. An ace from Anderson and back-to-back points from Caitlin Cooper, back in her first match from injury, evened the match at 19-19.
Troy took six of the next eight points to complete the rally and take the set, 25-21.
"Credit to Citadel. They played scrappy and kept the pressure on us all night," Lauer said. "We had some players step up in critical moments."
