Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy senior quarterback Kaleb Barker was one of three players named the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Week for his performance during the opening week of play, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday. Barker is now eligible for the 2019 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award, which is presented by the CoSIDA, The Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl.
Â
Barker made his return to the field in Troy's opener against Campbell after suffering a torn ACL, his third, in the Trojans' victory over Georgia State on Oct. 4 last season. The Decatur, Alabama native was systematic against the Camels completing 18-of-29 passes for 282 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Â
Prior to his injury, Barker was on pace for one of the best seasons at the position in school history. He finished the year with the highest completion percentage (73.0) ever by a Troy quarterback while his efficiency rating (163.3) was the fifth-best mark. Nationally, he would have ranked second and eighth, respectively, in the two categories.
Â
He became the first Troy quarterback since 2012 to top the century mark in rushing yards with 111 in that fateful game against Georgia State, and he tied the Troy single-game record with five touchdowns – four passing and one rushing – against Florida A&M.
Â
At the end of the season, three of the nominees will be chosen as Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award winners and will be recognized at a special ceremony during the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.Â
Â
Additionally, $30,000 will be donated in the names of the nine student-athletes selected as finalists to their school's general scholarship fund, with $15,000 being awarded in the names of the three winners and $15,000 on behalf of the six named honorable mention.Â
