TROY, Alabama – Chip Lindsey opened his first fall camp as Troy's head football coach on Friday with 110 players for a two-hour workout on the practice fields behind Trojan Arena.
"We're really excited to be out here," Lindsey said following the Friday morning workout. "I thought our guys flew around and we had a lot of really great energy. At the same time, we have a lot to clean up and a lot to work on, but the good thing is we have some time to do it. What we have to do now is watch the film, learn and really come back tomorrow and build on today."
All eyes were on senior quarterback Kaleb Barker who made his full return from an ACL injury he suffered last October against Georgia State. Barker went through spring drills with the Trojans but did not participate in team periods.
"Kaleb is a guy who is really talented, and he feels like it is his time," Lindsey said. "He is a confident guy right now and our team is confident in him. That was his first go in team settings, some of the reads are different. We've got the first few days of camp to get him comfortable."
Lindsey dedicated three of Friday's 22 periods to special teams while the rest of the opening day was spent installing packages on both sides of the ball and in the red zone.
Troy's offensive line, which returns four starters and its combined 91 starts among the projected starting five rank 15thnationally, also drew some attention on Friday. Senior Kirk Kelley leads the group with a pair of All-Sun Belt honors under his belt while Tristan Crowder joined Kelley on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.
"They are some of the big-time leaders on the team," Lindsey said. "They are really a hard-working group and take pride in doing their job the right way."
