TROY, Alabama – B.J. Smith's busy preseason continued on Thursday when the Troy senior running back was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. Presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
A native of Millbrook, Ala., Smith was named the Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year last week in addition to landing on the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award and the Doak Walker Award.
Smith rushed for 1,186 yards last season which led the Sun Belt over the 12 regular season games and ranked second, by one yard, for the entire season. Smith's 13 rushing touchdowns were the sixth most in a season in Troy history and were the most among running backs in the league.
An All-Sun Belt First Team selection last year, Smith set a school record after rushing for more than 100 yards in five straight games as he averaged 141.3 yards per game during the month of October; the fifth most in the country. He enters the 2019 season on pace to crack the career top five for rushing yards and touchdowns.
In addition to his excellence on the field, Smith is one of Troy's leaders off the field and in the classroom. On track to graduate this year with a degree in political science, Smith is active in all of Troy's community service efforts throughout the Troy community.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach.
