TROY, Alabama – With the 2019 season opener just two days away, Troy softball takes a look at the last group of players: the outfielders.
Â
Head coach Beth Mullins welcomes back a strong group of five outfielders – Stephanie Snyder, Grace Mirly, Brooke Echols, Taylor Corbett, and Talia Truitt.
Â
Snyder, a Grayson, Ga., native saw action in 57 games and started 55 last season. The senior blasted the second-most home runs on the team with seven, recorded nine multi-hit games, and led the team with nine multi-RBI games.
Â
Mirly ended last season with a 1.000 fielding percentage and a .310 on base percentage. The junior out of Jackson, Mo. played in 15 games with six starts.Â
Â
Echols, a sophomore, finished last season batting .200 with 18 RBIs and 36 total bases. The McDonough, Ga. native saw action in 48 games with 35 starts and recorded four home runs, a triple, and four doubles.
Â
"Stephanie Snyder, Grace Mirly, and Brooke Echols all bring big bats to the outfield," Mullins said. "This gives us a lot of flexibility when making the lineup."
Â
Corbett, a senior, started 49 of her 54 games played last season. The Phenix City, Ala. native finished the season batting .267 with 18 runs and eight RBIs. Corbett also reached base in seven consecutive games last season.
Â
Truitt, a native of Dothan, Ala., saw action in 25 games with 10 starts last season. The sophomore batted .385, recorded a .429 on base percentage, and stole four bases in five attempts.
Â
"We return five of our six outfielders from last year," Mullins said. "We have a lot of experience and depth in our outfield. Corbett and Truitt bring lots of speed into this group."
Â
The Trojans also welcome one new addition to the outfield – Katie Lively.
Â
Lively, a freshman, brings another major offensive contribution to the outfield. In her senior year, the Helena, Ala. native batted a .568 with 55 RBIs and 12 home runs.
Â
"As the only newcomer in the outfield, Katie Lively has done an outstanding job," Mullins said. "Her impact comes from not only in the outfield, but with her bat." Â
Â
Utility Hope Hernandez could also be seeing some playing time in the outfield. Hernandez sees playing time in the infield at catcher and second base.
Troy opens the 2019 season with the annual Trojan Classic this weekend at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans take on Maryland (3 p.m.) and Alabama (5:30 p.m.) on Friday; admission to all Troy softball games is free.
