Troy Sweeps Alabama State in Montgomery

Montgomery, Ala. – Troy took care of business against in-state foe Alabama State Wednesday night in Montgomery, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22). The Trojans secured their 21st win of the season, tied for the most in a single season this century.
The Trojans made quick work of the Hornets, picking up their 11th non-conference win of the year in 87 minutes. Troy has never lost to Alabama State, leading the all-time series against the Hornets, 33-0.
Troy finished with seven service aces against Alabama State, led by Cheyenne Hayes' season high of four. Ashley Guenveur recorded two while Amara Anderson added one.
Hayes moved into eighth place on Troy's all-time kills list with 1,069 career kills. Caitlin Cooper tied a career-high with 11 kills on the night. Julia Brooks also posted 11 kills to lead the Trojans while adding seven total blocks to her impressive night.
Anderson was stellar at setter once again, averaging 13.00 assists per set against the Hornets.
"Alabama state is always a tough place to play" head coach Josh Lauer said. "Our players gritted it out in a tough environment. We had some great performances out of our middles and right sides. We're looking forward to getting back in Trojan Arena Friday against South Alabama."
Set One
Alabama State stepped out to an early 8-4 lead before Troy rallied to retake the lead at 11-10. The Trojans were down by a point late at 20-21 but would score five of the last six points to win the opening set, 25-22. Brooks was dominant at the net in the opening set recording three blocks, including two solos. Cooper led the Trojans offensively with five kills in the opening set.
Set Two
Amara Anderson got things started right away for the Trojans with an ace to begin the second set. Troy used a 7-0 run to take a 14-5 lead over Alabama State an eventually pulled away 20-12. The Trojans kept their foot on the gas through the entire set, cruising to a 25-18 set two win.
Set Three
Troy jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after a huge kill from Brooks. The Trojans weren't fazed by a hot Lockhart Gymnasium late in the match as Troy pushed its lead to five at 13-8. Alabama State would make things interesting, pulling within two at 18-16, but Troy would put the Hornets away 25-22 to clinch the sweep.
