Opening Statement
Big win for our team on the road in conference play. Anytime you can win on the road in conference, it's a big accomplishment. You look around at all the parity in our conference and weekly scores, people who beat other people and so forth, so I think anytime you can get a win in conference it's big. For us, we just try and build on momentum from the week before. For the last four weeks, we've talked about building momentum each week, taking it one day at a time and executing. Texas State was a complete win, executing in all three phases. For us to win these next two games against two quality opponents, we just need to continue building on what works and improve on what necessarily did not.  Â
Â
On the performance of the offense
Kaleb (Barker) is continuing to play with confidence and doing a great job of executing when needed. Really excited about him as he continues to improve. Kaleb was outstanding operating the offense at a high level. The next few weeks we will be tested but Kaleb continues to execute. Threw ball to backs more than before, attribute to his development along with throwing to 11 different receivers. Overall, good performance. Very pleased offensively. Offensive line may not have played their best, but still solid giving Kaleb time to throw as well as giving backs space to run and make plays.
Â
On the defense
We had four takeaways which was key to the game. Carlton (Martial) was his usual self, having two interceptions including one for a touchdown. KJ Robertson had the best game since I've been here, with eight tackles and being all over the field leading the team. We have to work on limiting explosive plays and make sure we don't give up any big plays. Solid effort defensively with the four takeaways which gave us great field position.Â
Â
On the matchup against Louisiana
They are averaging 38 points per game, third in the conference along with leading in total offense and scoring defense. When you flip the film on and see this is one of the better teams in our league. It is going to be a lot of fun with two good football teams playing; we're ready for the challenge.
Â
On the Louisiana offense
Offensively it starts with their running backs, all three who will eventually play in the NFL in Elijah Mitchell, Trey Ragas, Raymond Calais. Running backs make up bulk of offense. They're going to run the football so we're going to have to make sure to play a good game upfront. Levi Lewis, quarterback, gets the ball to playmakers so we have to make sure we know where he is at all times.
On the Louisiana defense
On defense it starts with Jacques Boudreaux; he makes plays all over the field. Ferrod Gardner is what you look for from an athletic standpoint. Their defensive line is very athletic, defensive backs are aggressive and contest throws; it is going to be a big challenge for us.Â
Â
On difference in team since CoastalÂ
Our young guys are growing up and maturing, and we've got guys making plays on the defense who are playing with more confidence. We're playing solid in all three phases, and when you can do that, it gives you a good chance to win.Â
Â
On progression of Kaleb BarkerÂ
Offense is not much different than before, maybe except for some terminology. He's a smart guy who is getting reps on the field which can't be simulated. He's tried to dial in the last couple weeks being specific, making great decisions and watching film and it's paying off.
Â
On approach for last two games with chance to make bowl and possible Sun Belt ChampionshipÂ
We have to take it one day at a time and control the things that we can control. We have been talking about that for a long time and have been telling them to focus on what's important and focus on things that they can control. We have a lot of our goals still out there. We backed ourselves into a corner with two games left, and we are not where we want to be and would rather have things wrapped up. We have to continue being who we are and approach every day to try to improve, have a great plan and go out and execute the next two Saturdays.Â
Â
On opportunity to play possible Sun Belt Championship teamsÂ
(Appalachian State and Louisiana) are good football teams with good players and coaches. It gives us a chance to throw it out there. We have a great football team and we have guys who ae growing up and getting better. Our guys are excited for the opportunity. Both teams have had good years, so we're excited for the chance to play both.Â
