TROY, Ala. – Coming off one of the most dominant defensive performances in school history, Troy defensive tackle Marcus Webb has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Webb recorded three sacks and seven tackles – both career highs – in Troy's victory over Georgia Southern this past Saturday. Webb's three sacks rank as the 10th most in a game nationally this season and the third most in Troy history.
Â
A senior from Decatur, Ala., Webb paced a Troy defense that recorded nine sacks against a Georgia Southern team entered the week 13th nationally with just nine sacks allowed on the season – the nine sacks are the fourth most nationally in a game by a team this season. Â
Â
The Troy defense held the nation's seventh-ranked rushing attack to just 152 yards on 49 carries – 3.1 yards per carry and 117 yards below their season average. The Trojans forced the Eagles into five three-and-outs in the game, and Georgia Southern did not have a single possession inside the red zone.
Â
Troy is back on the road this weekend with a trip to Texas State; kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
