TROY, Ala. – Carlton Martial has been named to his third freshman All-America team as the Football Writers Association of America tabbed the Troy linebacker to its prestigious Freshman All-America Team on Monday. Martial was also named to the USA Today and The Athletic Freshman All-America Teams last month.
Â
Martial came to Troy as a walk-on and earned a scholarship prior to the start of the 2018 season. Undersized among his peers at a listed 5-foot-10, Martial finished his rookie campaign with 76 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss on the season, both tops among freshmen in the Sun Belt. His tackle total ranks fourth nationally among freshmen and his three sacks are the second most in the Sun Belt.
Â
Playing in front of his hometown family and friends at the Dollar General Bowl, Martial forced a pair of fumbles, recovered one and recorded six tackles in Troy's 42-32 win over Buffalo; it was Troy's fourth straight bowl victory.
Â
He is rated as the 23rd best defensive player in the country by Pro Football Focus and the sixth best against the run (min. 350 snaps). Martial, who started nine games at middle linebacker, was credited with 14 total pressures on the year which resulted in his three sacks, four hits and seven hurries.
Â
Martial was a leader on a Troy defense that ranked 11th nationally allowing just 3.29 yards per carry and third in turnovers gained (31). The Trojans led the Sun Belt in sacks, turnovers gained, red zone defense, fumbles recovered and interceptions.
Â
Martial and the Trojans are coming off a third-straight bowl victory (fourth straight dating back to 2010) and a 10-3 season. Troy's 31 wins since the start of the 2016 season currently stand as the eighth most in the country over that period. Â
