TROY, Alabama – Brandon Hall has been promoted to Troy's defensive coordinator, head coach Chip Lindsey announced Monday afternoon. Hall coached Troy's outside linebackers and served as special teams coordinator last season in his first year with the program.
Hall joined the Troy staff following a four-year stint as co-defensive coordinator at Jacksonville State where his defenses ranked in the top 20 nationally each season, including in the top five his final two seasons.
"I am very appreciative of Coach Lindsey for his trust in me to continue what we've accomplished on the defensive side of the football," Hall said. "I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Coach (Neal) Brown and Coach (Vic) Koenning for establishing a culture and raising the expectations at Troy. I am humbled and thrilled to have an opportunity to work every day to ensure that we continue our strong defensive tradition at Troy."
Hall's first season at Troy saw the Trojans rank third nationally in turnovers gained, 10thin sacks and 16thin tackles for loss. A league-high 12 defensive players were named to the All-Sun Belt Team following the 2018 season with a trio of first team selections. Additionally, Troy had one of the top special teams units in the country ranking fourth in net punting and ninth in kickoff returns.
The Trojans finished the 2018 season with a 10-3 overall record and defeated Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl. Troy ranked 31stnationally in total defense with just 347.9 yards allowed per game and led the Sun Belt in red zone defense by holding opponents to points just 77.3 percent of the time.
"Brandon's track record speaks for itself. He made a great first impression last season and has history of coaching high-level defenses at every level," Lindsey said. "We will be schematically similar going forward with his style of defense, which will be a big positive for our players. What cannot go unnoticed was his work on special teams last season. Brandon's ability to scheme that phase of the game played a large role in multiple victories last season and will be critical to our overall success going forward."
Prior to joining the Troy staff, Hall was coming off a four-year stint as the co-defensive coordinator at Jacksonville State where he also coached the Gamecocks' safeties. In his four seasons at JSU, the Gamecocks rolled off a perfect 31-0 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play, won four conference titles and posted a 43-8 overall record.
