TROY, Ala. – Jabir Daughtry-Frye and BJ Smith combined for 243 rushing yards and the Troy defense recorded nine sacks in Troy's 45-21 rout of Coastal Carolina in Sun Belt Conference play at The Vet Saturday afternoon.

Daughtry-Frye carried the ball five times for 140 yards with one score and Smith toted the rock for 103 yards on 10 carries with a pair of scores to lead a Troy (4-1, 2-0) rushing attack that compiled 282 yards and set a school record with an average of 9.1 yards per rush.

The Trojan defense set a school FBS record of their own with the nine sacks led by two apiece from Jarvis Hayes and Carlton Martial. Tron Folsom led all players with nine tackles in the game, while Hayes and Martial both registered eight of their own.

Marcus Jones became Troy's all-time leader in kickoff returns for touchdowns when he took back the opening boot 96 yards to the house. It was the fourth of his career with three of those coming against Coastal (3-2, 1-1). Jones also returned the opening kickoff of the game last season against the Chanticleers.

Up 7-0 early, Neal Brown reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a double pass play as wide receiver Luke Whittemore connected with Daughtry-Frye on a 35-yard touchdown. Troy went up 21-0 shortly after when Smith walked in with his first of his two scores.

Coastal managed to pull within 10 at the half, 24-14, but the Trojans made sure that a repeat of last week's second half meltdown at ULM wouldn't present itself. Troy outscored Coastal 21-7 in the second half with touchdowns from Deondre Douglas, Daughtry-Frye and Smith.

Troy faces a quick turnaround with Georgia State coming to The Vet on Thursday night for another Sun Belt East Division showdown. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.

"We had a nice little discussion at halftime with both phases and really challenged our football team to put the foot on the gas. We came out and got a touchback which is what we talked about. We got a stop on defense and we quickly scored on offense and really got in control of the game. We got up 21-0 and we had a chance to put it away when the defense got the turnover, but we went four-and-out and really all self-inflicted. All the offense mistakes we made were self-inflicted and we have to stop having Troy beat Troy."

Marcus Jones returned the opening kickoff of the game for a touchdown; it marked the second straight season that Jones returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Coastal Carolina. Jones became Troy's all-time leader with his fourth career kickoff return for a touchdown. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns last season as a true freshman to tie Troy University Sports Hall of Fame member Frank Sadler (1957-59) for the Troy career record.

• Luke Whittemore connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jabir Daughtry-Frye in the first quarter; it marked the third straight season that a non-quarterback has thrown a touchdown pass for Troy -- John Johnson threw one each in 2016 and 2017.

• Troy improved to 70-38 all-time in Sun Belt Conference games which is the most since the Trojans joined the league in 2004 ... Troy's 70 wins trail Arkansas State by just three for the most in league history and the Red Wolves joined the conference three years prior to Troy.

• Troy held Coastal Carolina to just 145 yards rushing on 54 carries (2.7 ypc); the Chanticleers entered the game ranked 12th nationally averaging 266.5 yards per game on the ground.
