Roseto, Italy – Recent Troy graduate Wesley Person has signed a professional basketball contract with the Roseto Sharks in Italy's Serie A2, the Brantley, Ala., native announced on Wednesday.
Person signed a one-year deal with the Roseto Sharks.
"It feels good to sign my first professional contract," Person said. "The hard work is paying off and getting the opportunity to play professional at any level is a blessing. I'm ready to start and see what's in store."
The Serie A2 league is the second-tier of the three-tier Italian league pyramid where promotion and relegation occur between the leagues. The 2018-19 campaign will mark the fourth year that the Roseto Sharks will play in Serie A2.
In his four seasons at Troy, Person finished his career averaging 15.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game over 128 games. In his senior campaign, Person broke the Troy scoring record, the Sun Belt three-point record and became the first-ever Trojan to score 2,000 points.
Additionally, Person set career highs in points (551) and points per game (17.8) in his final season as a Trojan. At the end of the season, Person garnered All-Sun Belt Third Team honors, making him the sixth player in Sun Belt history to be named all-conference four times.
"We're extremely proud to see Wesley begin his professional career at such a high level in Europe," Head Coach Phil Cunningham said. "Italy is renown as one of the strongest countries in the world when it comes to professional basketball and Wesley's outstanding career here at Troy opened up that door of opportunity for him. He's come a long way from a lightly recruited young man out of Brantley, Ala. to this next stage of his career and his off-the-chart work ethic and commitment to improve his game have been the keys to his success."
Person will report to Roseto, which is located on the Adriatic coast 45 minutes north of Pescara, on Aug. 22. The Serie A2 season is set to begin in October and last through May.
