Glover Leads Troy Over Jaguars; Trojans Advance in Sun Belt Tournament

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana- Facing elimination, No. 5 Troy (33-25) continued its streak of one-run games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a 1-0 shutout victory over the No. 6 South Alabama Jaguars (29-27). Junior pitcher Peyton Glover threw a just three-hitter in Troy's winning effort.
Â
After walking three of the first four batters in the game, Glover shook off the nerves to only allow three hits, no runs and toss three timely swinging strikeouts, all to end South Alabama's time at the plate.
Â
Both teams were gridlocked in a scoreless game until junior Taylor Corbett drove in Talia Truitt from third on an RBI-single in the fourth inning. Truitt posted Troy's first of four hits with a bunt single, and Carli Kayler followed with an infield single in the second inning.
Â
The duo made it happen again in the fourth, as Truitt used her speed to reach base on another bunt. Kayler hit a groundball to the pitcher, but a bad throw to first allowed Kayler to reach and Truitt to advance to third, setting Corbett up for a perfect opportunity. With two-outs, Corbett came through clutch with a hard-hit single into left field, plating Truitt from third as Troy took a 1-0 lead.
Â
Glover and her defense did the rest of the work, holding the Jaguars off the plate. South Alabama left nine runners stranded, including the bases loaded in the first inning as Glover tossed her first strikeout of the day catching Hannah Smith swinging.
Â
QUOTABLE
"It was a dog fight," head coach Beth Mullins said. "All but one of the games in this tournament have been one-run ball games. I think our biggest advantage, that we have had all year, is great pitching and defense. Peyton Glover came out and threw a gem of a game. I could not be more proud of her. I think our offense struggled a little bit, but when you pitch that well you don't have to put up a lot of runs. Talia Truitt did a great job of getting on base and Taylor Corbett came through with a key hit."
Â
"I came in thinking 'I have to do this for my team,'" Truitt said. "I just went to the plate calm and with a great approach to just get the job done. I'm supposed to lay the ball down and get on base and do whatever I can for my team…we are just trying to leave it better than we found it, and winning this game is a big part of that."
