Troy to Host #SpitStrong Day Saturday
3/13/2018 11:39:00 AM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama – Troy baseball will honor freshman infielder Bobby Spitulski during Saturday's Sun Belt Conference game between the Trojans and Little Rock at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
The Oviedo, Florida-native and his family were involved in a serious car accident while returning from a vacation during the university's Christmas break. Bobby, the most severely injured of the family, sustained many injuries including head trauma in the accident.
Â
However, Spitulski was able to walk out of the hospital on his own power exactly a month after the accident. With each passing day, Bobby makes more and more progress, whether that is shown through just walking around or hitting soft toss into a net.
Â
This Saturday, Troy Athletics and the Trojan baseball team will recognize and honor Bobby and his family at Riddle-Pace Field – he will then throw out the first pitch for the game.
Â
The baseball team will wear green – the color for head trauma – SpitStrong t-shirts during batting practice. Also, the first 200 fans will receive a free green SpitStrong shirt and all other fans are encouraged to wear green to the game.
Â
During the hospital stay, numerous hospital expenses were accumulated. So, in the true spirit of the Trojan Family, Troy will collect proceeds on Bobby's behalf to assist with the medical bills.
Â
"We all know about the tragic accident and the medical issues Bobby Spitulski is dealing with," Troy head coach Mark Smartt said. "Saturday is an important day for TROY as we show our love and support for Bobby and his family. His progress after the accident has been remarkable and demonstrates his courage, determination and strength. Our players continue to draw inspiration from his strength and have committed to each other that our team must be #spitstrong every day. Bobby and his family have embodied that hashtag since the accident and we will continue to support all of them over the coming months. We are hoping to raise money for their medical costs during the day but most importantly we want to shower them with prayer, love and support throughout this process. I believe Saturday will be a day we all remember."Â
Â
For the duration of the 2018 season, the baseball team will wear green arm bands with the inscription "#SPITSTRONG" to pay tribute to its teammate. To continue to follow Bobby's progress, check out the family's Facebook page "Spits Prayer Group – Prayers for Bobby".
