Carlton Martial Named Freshman All-American

TROY, Ala. – Troy linebacker Carlton Martial has been named to The Athletic Freshman All-America Team released Thursday. It marks the second straight season that a Troy player has earned Freshman All-America honors after Marcus Jones was recognized last season.

Martial, a redshirt freshman from Mobile, Ala., heads to the Dollar General Bowl in his hometown with 70 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss on the season, both tops among freshmen in the Sun Belt. His tackle total ranks fourth nationally among freshmen and his three sacks are the second most in the Sun Belt.

A former walk-on, Martial earned a scholarship on the final day of fall camp heading into the season and went on to start eight games at middle linebacker. He is rated as the 19th best defensive player in the country by Pro Football Focus and the sixth best against the run. Martial was credited with 14 total pressures on the year which resulted in his three sacks, four hits and seven hurries.

Martial was a leader on a Troy defense that ranked 12thnationally allowing just 3.31 yards per carry and fifth in turnovers gained. The Trojans led the Sun Belt in sacks, tackles for loss, turnovers gained, red zone defense and interceptions.

Among the defensive players on The Athletic's Freshman All-America Team, four earned five-star ratings out of high school, four earned a four-star rating and two earned a three-star. Martial was an unranked prospect out of McGill-Toolen High School.
