Fourteen Troy Student-Athletes Earn Degrees at Fall Commencement

TROY, Ala. – Fourteen Troy University student-athletes were among the more than 700 students who received their degrees during Troy's fall commencement exercises Friday in Trojan Arena.

Five of Troy's athletic programs were represented in the first commencement ceremony of the 2018-19 academic year. Troy student-athletes continued their record-setting performance in the classroom with an 85 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the latest report issued by the NCAA. This comes on the heels of Troy student-athletes set a record in last spring's NCAA APR release.

Seven of Troy's 12 programs ranked in the top three among its peers in the Sun Belt in GSR with the men's golf, women's golf and volleyball programs posting perfect 100 percent marks. The men's basketball (94), baseball (89) and women's cross country/track (96) programs finished second in the Sun Belt and football (73) finished third.

Italian Sen. Massimo Mallegni, former mayor of Montgomery's sister city Pietrasanta, Italy, provided the keynote address at the commencement exercises. A native of Pietrasanta, Mallegni was elected to three terms as mayor. In 2017, he was elected to the Italian Senate, representing the Tuscany region as a member of the Forza Italia party. The first foreign citizen to be recognized as an honorary citizen of the City of Montgomery, he has also forged alliances between Pietrasanta and the cities of Ecaussiness, Belgium, Villeparisis, France, Grenzach Wyhlen, Germany and Utsunomiya, Japan.
